Biography

Tiago Fioreze is a Ph.D. student at the Design and Analysis of Communication Systems (DACS) group, which belongs to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science at the University of Twente. He is also a participant of the European Network of Excellence on Management Solutions for Next Generation Networks (EMANICS) and has been a researcher of the Gigaport-NG Research on Networks project. Tiago Fioreze was born in Tapera, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on October 10th, 1979. He graduated in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 2005 (Master of Science) and from the Federal University of Santa Maria in 2003 (Bachelor). His main topic of interest is Network Management, but he also has interest in areas such as Network Security and Fault Tolerance. Currently, he is investigating the use of self-management in optical networks, which is an activity belonging to the Gigaport-NG Research on Networks project. As a hobby in his spare time, Tiago Fioreze likes taking photographs. Some of his photographs can be found on the Web at his Picasa Web album. He is also an enthusiastic about sports, specially indoor soccer, which he practices regularly. Passionate about soccer as most Brazilian people, his favorite soccer team is Grêmio Foot-ball Porto Alegrense

PhD project description

Hybrid optical and packet switching networks are composed of multi-service optical switches that enable forwarding of data at multiple levels. Huge flows at the packet-level (IP-level) may be therefore moved to the optical-level, which is faster than the packet-level. Such move could be beneficial since congested IP networks could be off-loaded; leaving more resources for other IP flows. At the same time, the flows switched at the optical-level would receive better Quality of Service (QoS). The transfer of those flows to the optical-level requires the creation of dedicated light paths to carry them. Currently, two approaches are used for that purpose: the first is based on conventional management techniques and the second is based on GMPLS signaling. In both approaches, the decision which IP flows will be moved to light paths is taken by managers. As a result, only IP flows explicitly selected by such managers will take advantage of being transferred over light path connections. However, it may be that there are also other large IP flows, not known to the manager, that could potentially profit from being moved to the optical-level. The solution aimed in this Ph.D. thesis is to add self-management capabilities to the multi-service optical switches and make them responsible for identifying which IP flows should be moved to the optical level and establish and release light path connections for such flows.
