PhD project description

Networks are the backbone of our modern information society. Communication, trading, information exchange and fast and efficient research worldwide depends heavily on functional network structures, as well is todays everday life going to be interwoven more and more with the usage and availability of these systems. Because of the enormous possibilities and values like business secrets or money transfers, networks are getting more and more in the focus of specialized, well organized and equipped cybercriminals. For securing the networks, the usage of Firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems are not sufficient any longer. Instead of several systems and data sources, the network as a whole has to be considered.

The object of the following work is to develop a fingerprinting technique for identifying whole network segments. The idea is, that unauthorized changes or manipulations are easier detectable by evaluating the characteristics of the whole network.
