Definition

Power management is really an ambiguous term that variously refers to the management of power distribution in electrical grids, the management of power consumption in smart environments (e.g., smart homes, offices, ...), power effectiveness of data centers and other cloud environments, and the management of power consumption within a computing system such as a sensor, mobile-phone, desktop computer or larger scale cloud environment. Managing the power consumption for a computing task should not be confused with the power effectiveness of that system (usually applied to a data center or larger environment) which usually refers to the ratio between the power used for the computing task and the overall power consumption of the center (i.e., including cooling, power dissipation etc).
