Phase 1

(Training,Standardization and Technology Transfer)

Motivation

Enabling acceptance and strong impact of scientifc excellence and innovation is one of the major goals of a network of excellence. Standardization activities, strong interaction with industry and world class tutorials and trainings are a good vector towards this.

Objectives

This work package has the following objectives:

  • The support of tutorial setup and training initiatives to the outside world
  • The contribution to standardization organizations
  • The organization of Technology Transfer days
  • Interaction with industry & Liaison with other projects

Tasks

T5.1: Tutorials & publications

A number of tutorials will be developed on topics like QoS management, security management, accounting, Internet management protocols, policy-based management, management information modeling and management technologies. These tutorials will be presented by MAGIX partners at conferences, workshops and within industry. The online versions of these tutorials can also be used by companies and other organizations for offering continuous education and training programs to their employees. Some online tutorials will be in an interactive form and include exercises that take advantage of the virtual labs that will be developed and maintained in work package 2.

In addition to this, MAGIX partners may also get involved in writing books on one or more of the above topics. These books will present the state of the art on such topic, and thus be of a tutorial nature. Note that this kind of work may be related to the writing of course books, as described in work package 1.

T5.2: Standardization

An important goal of this NoE is to monitor and influence international standardization activities relevant to network Management. Such activities take place within the IETF, IRTF, IAB, DMTF, TMF, ITU, W3C, OMG, OASIS and GGF. This work package will actively sponsor efforts that strengthen the European presence and enhance the influence of European research on future international standards in this area. An explicit objective of MAGIX is to play a leading role in early standardization activities on Internet management, such as performed within the IRTF Network Management Research Group (NMRG). An outcome of that work will be research papers, internet-drafts and RFCs.

T5.3: Interaction with industry & other research projects

This work package is also responsible for the collection of network management requirements from industry, as well as the transfer of knowledge to industry. As part of this effort, MAGIX has defined the so-called theta-day instrument for industry (see B4.3 – Activities to spread excellence). Within this work package, theta-days will be coordinated at the national levels. This task is also responsible for the identification and liaisons establishment with complementary NoEs and with national and European projects in the area of network management. Information exchange will be two ways: projects in the area of MAGIX may take advantage of the knowledge that is available within MAGIX, and MAGIX will learn from these projects new requirements and results.

Phase 2

(Standardization and Technology Transfer)

Objectives

This work-package has the following objectives:

  • Foster active participation of EMANICS members in standardization activities (IETF, IRTF)
  • Establish and maintain interactions with industry
  • Maintain and extend cooperation with other networks and projects (within Europe and world-wide)

Description of work

5.1: Standardization

An important goal of this NoE is to monitor and influence international standardization activities relevant to network management. Such activities take place within the IETF, IRTF, IAB, DMTF, TMF, ITU, W3C, OMG, OASIS and GGF. This work-package will actively sponsor efforts that strengthen the European presence and enhance the influence of European research on future international standards in this area. An explicit objective of EMANICS is to play a leading role in early standardization activities on Internet management, such as performed within the IRTF Network Management Research Group (NMRG). An outcome of that work will be research papers, internet-drafts and RFCs.

T5.2: Interaction with industry

One of the tasks of this work-package is to interact with industry to collect network management requirements and to transfer knowledge. As part of this effort, EMANICS has defined the so- called theta-day instrument for industry (see B5.5 – technology transfer). Two kinds of theta- days exist: national and international. Although theta days at national level may be organized by single EMANICS partners, these days will be open to other EMANICS partners. The duration of a theta day may vary from half a day to multiple days. The results of a theta day will be reported to all WP5 members.

T5.3: Cooperation with other networks and projects

This work-package is also responsible for the identification and liaisons establishment with complementary NoEs and with national and European projects in the area of network management. Information exchange will be in two directions: projects in the area of EMANICS may take advantage of the knowledge that is available within EMANICS, and EMANICS will learn from these projects new requirements and results. Cooperation with other NoEs can also take the form of jointly organized workshops and summer-schools, such as EUNICE’07. EMANCIS will establish and maintain a joint cooperation with the AGAVE project. The first outcome of this cooperation will be a joint workshop help in Brussels in November 2007.

Phase3

(Standardization and Technology Transfer)

Objectives

  • Maintain and extend cooperation with other networks and projects (within Europe and world-wide)

Description of work

Such activities take place within the IETF, IRTF, IAB, DMTF, TMF, ITU, W3C, OMG, OASIS, ACF and GGF. This work-package will actively sponsor efforts that strengthen the European presence and enhance the influence of European research on future international standards in this area. An explicit objective of EMANICS is to play a leading role in early standardization activities on Internet management, such as performed within the IRTF Network Management Research Group (NMRG). An outcome of that work will be research papers, internet-drafts and RFCs. In 2009 an important IETF related activity will be Netconf interoperability testing.

T5.2: Interaction with industry

One of the tasks of this work-package is to interact with industry to collect network management requirements and to transfer knowledge. As part of this effort, EMANICS has defined the so-called theta day instrument for industry (see B5.5 – technology transfer). Two kinds of theta days exist: national and international. Most theta days will be of the first kind; although these days may be organized by single EMANICS partners, they will be open to other EMANICS partners. The duration of such theta day may vary from half a day to multiple days. The results of national theta days will be reported to all WP5 members. The international theta days will be organized as bigger, one day workshops. For 2009, three of such workshops are planned; the expected topics are Netflow/IPFIX analysis, Economic aspects of management and management of P2P systems.

T5.3: Cooperation with other networks and projects

This work-package is also responsible for the identification and liaisons establishment with professional organizations, complementary NoEs, and national and European projects in the area of network management. Information exchange will be in two directions: projects in the area of EMANICS may take advantage of the knowledge that is available within EMANICS,and EMANICS will learn from these projects new requirements and results. Cooperation with professional organizations will focus on IFIP WG6.6 (Management of Networks and Distributed Systems) and IEEE CNOM. In the next period collaboration with other European projects will focus on the COST TMA (Traffic Measurement and Analysis) project.
